Etape de Tour 2008 – 6 July

A selection of London Phoenix riders braved the wet and foggy Étape route in the Pyrénées this year. Nearly all finished, though most not as impressively as our very own Ben Johnson and Alex Christians, who both managed ride times of 6h 36m.

Liz and Phil still smiling at the base of the HautacamSeveral of us stayed at the lovely Chez Passet just outside Lourdes, and it was tempting to stop there to avoid tackling the mighty Tourmalet and Hautacam climbs. Allegedly, the Tourmalet towers before you as you approach, showing just what faces you ahead – unfortunately in the weather we had on the day, you could barely see a few meters up the road at times. At least we weren’t subjected to the oppressive 38 degree heat that Pete had faced a couple of weeks earlier when he rode the Hubert Arbes sportif, covering a similar route.

The rain and fog forced a more tentative descent than we might otherwise have enjoyed, not to mention giving Liz mild frostbite (why didn’t I think to take long-fingered gloves to France in July!) On the positive side: powering through the closed roads, unhampered by traffic or lights was amazing, and the crowd support was truly inspiring.

The climb up to Hautacam was narrow, steep and littered with riders who just couldn’t take any more, but the feeling of achievement as we rounded the corner to see the Flamme Rouge marking just one, relatively easy kilometre to go, couldn’t be beaten.

We’ll have to go back another time to see those allegedly wonderful views…

Spot the Phoenix – Worcester Sprint Triathon – 22 June

Worcester sprint triathlon swimmersAs the London Triathlon looms, London Phoenix Francis Cooper found himself experiencing the full shock of an open water panic attack surrounded by murk, weeds and thrashing bodies at the Worcester Sprint Triathlon on June 22nd. Gentle breathing and dreams of Sa Calobran descents ensured sufficient recovery to claw back on a super windy bike leg and finish the event 29th out of 112 finishers. Seven weeks to London and counting…and we’re promised a picture with a bike in it for Francis’s next triathlon event!

Beastway, July 2008

The 2008 Beastway season of off-road racing at Hainault country park has now finished and five London Phoenix riders achieved top places in four categories. Alex, Abi, Geraldine and Stuart (the 5th, Matt, was on holiday when this picture was taken)

Paris-Roubaix, June 2008

Sarah Strong’s account of the 175km Paris-Roubaix sportive in June

Most of our group had chosen to do the 175km ride (all the fun of the cobbles without the boring road bits beforehand!). By the time we arrived for the sign-on at Bohain it was about 7-7.30am and we set off together to shouts of ‘bon route!’ from the marshals. A rather overcast morning, and with a distinct freshness to it which was pleasant cycling weather. The initial few kilometres of tarmac warmed the legs and there was a distinct sense of expectation – the ride would really start with the first section of cobbles at Troisvilles….Read the full story here

We are a group of London-based cyclists, who get together for races and training rides. We have a website forum as our virtual clubhouse, and instead of regular weekly club rides from a set place we arrange to meet up for mountain bike, road or cyclocross rides, races and time trials from a variety of venues. We also meet up socially every month.

See the on-road and off-road sections for news on upcoming events we're doing as well as our recent achievements.

Joining us is easy, fill out the form and send it to us. If you have any queries please contact us.
