Life in the London Phoenix is varied and each aspect of activity has its fans.
A number of willing club volunteers have stepped forward to keep the club coordinated and all of whom are eager for member's help and ideas.
Since forming, the club has promoted a number of races and events and we pride ourselves on the fact that we have members who are willing to put something into club life and the cycling community.
Most of the club's information gathering, chat, calendar etc. are featured in the London Phoenix Smart Group, which is only available to club members. This website we hope gives you an idea of the club, the Gallery includes pictures of some of the clubs activities.
London Phoenix social gatherings are held every second Wednesday of each month, alternately in the south and north of London. Any ideas for further socials are welcome, particularly suggestions regarding a suitable venue for London Phoenix parties.
We also run regular road and mountain bike rides.
Cross races are held over mixed terrain courses and MTB's are welcome. The Cyclo-Cross season is held over the winter from October to March. It's accessible, being one of the cheaper forms of racing to compete in and events are often held in city parks, lasting one hour. Events are usually easy to get to and give you time to get home for tea. Most races are entry on the line.
We race at the London Cyclo Cross League which runs in the autumn and winter; races are held across London and the South East. A league is an opportunity to check out the local cycling scene, such as which are the active clubs. Also. you will soon get to know the faces that crop up at many events during the year.
Although London Phoenix is a new club many members have long experience of racing in and around London. You can expect to find Phoenix riders taking part in National, regional and local events.
These include the Crystal Palace Tuesday evening criteriums, the Tuesday night Eastway time trial series, road racing on Thursday evenings at Eastway. Whilst many a Saturday will see race meetings being held, as will some Sundays. The Hillingdon Circuit features club members at the Tuesday league and weekend promotions.
The Surrey Road League is Britain's biggest and offers racing for all abilities, especially for lesser category riders (that's us, folks) and women. Racing is held on the open road at the weekend and during the week across Surrey. To be part of the league we as a club must take responsibility for marshaling a race.
Off road racing centres upon Beastway, southern events and the National Points Series. Beastway runs from May running each week until August at 7.30pm, each Wednesday. Beastway is more than just a race series and we take charge for one night, this is a great series to get to know the 'scene' in London.
Track racing in London is dominated by the Olympic Stadium at Herne Hill, south London. The track is 450 metres long and out doors, the Manchester velodrome is 250 and indoors (most indoor tracks are smaller). The corners are banked, but not as extreme as some, the surface is concrete and coated with something special to make it super fast.
Herne Hill was refurbished in the last few years (De Laune CC have a piece of the old wooden track from before WW1 on their clubroom wall). The new track surface has raised the circuit and this explains why the listed grandstand buildings (bar, changing rooms) are set back a little from the track.
Herne Hill hosts weekly training sessions (throughout the winter), at other times there are special days for women, juveniles and juniors, there is a Summer Monday and Wednesday racing League, plus many other race meetings during the year, including one on Good Friday.
