Thanks very much to all who gave their time to make it a great day at the Super Cross. And well done (again) to LP’s Matt Webber – third on the podium at the end of a very tough race – “I think I might have jacked it in if it hadn’t been for all the cheering and support!”

As it happens, Matt almost didn’t make it to the start but what did happen speaks volumes for this fantastic sport and brilliant event: “One of the corners on the downhill from the steps was very treacherous with ball-bearings (alright, acorns) strewn across the apex. I slid off and landed quite hard on my right hand side. I quickly realised that I’d somehow managed to jam my chain around the little chain guide between the two jockey wheels. Try as I might, I couldn’t dislodge it, so, with about 10 minutes to go to the start I had to sprint all the way back to the car park to find my tools and remove one of the jockey wheels to reroute the chain. Far from ideal.

As I legged it through the crowd, one of the Hope Team riders was coming across the car park. Desperate and only half-joking, I asked if the team had a mechanic I could borrow. He asked what was wrong and offered to help out while I did my final pre-race prep. I’m always nervous pre-race, so I thanked him and handed over my allen keys. Three minutes later, one fixed bike and one happy Phoenixer. The Hope rider in question was Paul Oldham, national champ and elite race winner by more than a minute. Brilliant.”

Well done one and all, and thanks again. Full results here.
