Thew main photo on the entry page of the website is leading me into a very false sense of security, it's tarmac. Almost half on road I note. I've entered onto the Pre Selection list. I haven't got much of an off road CV so let's see if being female and having a bike is enough.

They're not actually wrong. There are some very pleasant tarmac sections involved

As Steve says, there are some bits of flat tarmac linking the 3 peaks

I got a full account of every hazard from Wayne Crombie at ELV the other night. Downhill bunny hops over water grills with vertical sides every 50 metres, downhill slabs of rock, on and on he went...sounds terrifying!

Hahaha. Thank you. Am genuinely feeling it....the fear. Think I am going to go back to run training, up and down Parliament Hill or Swains, that might be my best survival strategy.
Anyone who has the patience to ride off road with me in the meantime will be rewarded with cake and much amusement. I fell in a bush just 2 days ago and then collided with a roadworks barrier on a cycle path and as if that wasn't enough when I got off the bike I managed to whack myself in the face with a tennis racket. Unco.

Tam, running up Swains and Parliament Hill won't help. You need to find somewhere steep. And ideally slippery.

Simon Scarsbrook (3 px veteran) used to run up the stairs of a tower block with his bike on his shoulder. That's probably a good place to start :P

I've heard a few people saying they run up flights of stairs. Not are how far you are from Ally Pally but that would definitely help. Up from the Supercross start to the main road worked well for me. Bear in mind, you'll never get much beyond a trudge so the key is to just get used to having your bike on your shoulder for 45 mins...

The bit I never considered is the part Wayne Crombie outlined to you. Downhill on the steps of Whernside (?) was, for me, just horrible. I had no idea what to do on parts of that so I'd also suggest finding some decent off-road riding and practising going DOWNHILL. That was the bit where I was way out of my depth.

Whereas downhill off whernside (bunny hopping the irrigation gutters and clattering down the steps at the bottom) was the only bit I rode with a massive grin. It's the latent mountain biker in me.

Training in Wales next week. I must be able to find some terrifying downhill stuff there (to walk down!)
