Torq in your Sleep 2016

Post by Steve Hanks » Thu Jan 14, 2016 3:54 pm

Entries already open

...and it tends to sell out quite quickly. We had 2 x third place finishes last years, so there's Club honour at stake.

I'm minded to do the easier 12h Solo myself, but may consider a Pair's entry if anyone's up for it?

I'd like to do a ladies team for 12/24 hour for this or another event around the same time. Tarne, Tam, Michelle any interest?

Just had a look Lucinda as I had been thinking about doing this kind of thing (was thinking also of Revolve - the cycling as many times as you can until sanity declines round Brands Hatch in 24hours nonsense...).
Torq is the August Bank Holiday weekend - not sure I can do that date but I would be up for an event like this, as long as it's more endurance than technical. Just looked as well at the Scottish series and have come over all dreamy...

Mountain Mayhem on June 19 is less technical, although this event isn't very technical. The Bontrager event in July is more fun than both but is slightly more technical.

But not so much that you couldn't ride it. And there's no pressure to place well, just doing it is an awesome experience, just riding around under the Sun and Stars* a few times.

*mostly.

I'm selling you the event, not speaking for myself... :D

I'm struggling what to do with this one. Based on last year, I'd be confident of top 5 on 6hr based on my times, but top 10 in 12hr looks bloody hard to achieve.

Hey Lu, I would have been up for it but will be finishing up the Haute Route Pyrenees end of August so don't think I'll feel like doing a 24 hour mtb event :). Up for some others if I can.

Lucinda - it's some way off but I would "like" to do an event like this at some point and right now I look free then... Not sure I could survive a 24 but would give a 12 a shot.

So, places are filling up, who's in? I've entered the 12 Solo this year, and will be well prepared as this is two days after I land from the eat-as-much-as-you-like family holiday - carb loading extraordinaire. :D

Think I'm entered into a 3 man team and will be taking Fred (my 13yo lad). Any other LPers committed?

Yes I'm there for the 6hr, albeit not competitively as I've returned from Hols where I was gorging on San Miguel and cake. This is a warm up / fitness boost for MSG the week after.

I'll be there from Saturday as the Kids are racing also, see you about no doubt.

Fred podium pants.JPG
Ooer my back, etc...another fun day/night at Minley, this time riding in the male 3 rider cat with Russ from Hackney GT and Neil Cooper, a long term associate of Russ. Well organised, good atmosphere, pretty low key but with enough going on to make it feel like a proper event.
On the Saturday there were the kids races with Stan's son, Dylan, going like a train in his one, at the front all the way until he had a prang in the woods and came in third. Fred, my lad, and I were having a cup of tea waiting for the start of his race when the organiser lady came running over saying that his race had started, they'd decided to run all the older categories together, so followed a comedy rush to the start where we saw the peloton heading off into the dust. Not the best start and as he came round for lap 2 he still didn't know he had another 3 to go. He did get on the podium but there were only 3 finishers in the 13-15 class...
We managed a fairly respectable 4th in our category the next day with Russ setting the fastest lap times and me and Neil not too far behind. I must admit to being apprehensive about the night riding and managed 2 offs in the first dark lap, the second a quite spectacular endo whilst enthusiastically but inaccurately riding the A line I'd committed to. I hit a tree stump at some speed which suddenly appeared towards the top of the exit of the rooty half pipe thingy. Nice dismount, so embarrassing rather than painful. Harvey (ex LP) was a witness to this but it was only after getting in that I realized it was him who'd been asking if I was ok.
Some of the solo 12 hour riders were blisteringly quick, shooting past me on the last couple of laps where tiredness and caution were slowing me down, obviously technique means you can save energy but still some were setting faster laps at 11 pm than I could manage sprinting in the day time.
Anyhoo, all good fun, need to get in some more practise and upper body strength!
Didn't see Stan at the end of his 6 hour solo, hope it went ok and your shoulder held out.

Well done Neil & HGT.

Actually Dylan came 2nd, the young lady in front was excluded for some reason. A great race for him listening to all my theory that whilst keeps me mediocre got him at the front on the start line, sprinting a 10m lead and maintaining that until he fell in a bush on the last lap. I'm proud that there were no 7yo historonics and he got straight back on to podium 2nd

Tough for me though. Mentality this was just a "warm" up for two MSG races to come and not for position so I was (too) relaxed and 3.5KG overweight returning from holiday, with no "sharp" riding in August. The 6h start was as fast as a 90min XCO - massive sprints. I ended on the front of the 2nd "pack" trading places at the front of it in about 16th until about lap 4 when said shoulder did indeed stop working. I spent a few minutes working it out to relieve the pain on the side of the trail as Russ went past, but lost places eventually coming 24th and finished quite painfully. As the physio had predicted, 6h is indeed now my limit. Heavy legs and out of condition was not the best way to run that race which is basically 6h of continuous smashing.

Enjoyable weekend though!
