London League

A good start to the cyclo cross season for London Pheonix as Chris, Len and Matt confronted the challenging conditions of London League Round 1 at Fowlmead.

Heavy rain throughout the morning had left the course wet and slippery, and this, combined with blustery winds led to some difficult riding for the hundred or so riders who took to the line for the first race of the season. Chris and Matt, gridded thanks to some good performances last season, got held up in some early clashes as enthusiastic riders jockeyed for position during some of the more technical sections on the hectic first lap.

But as the riders thinned out, the boys in black (and red and yellow) began to fight their way back through the field, picking up speed as conditions improved, and learning the secrets of an exciting course.

Len, in his first UK ‘cross race was amazed by the intensity of the effort required. “Do I really want to participate in a sport where I’m averaging 188 bpms for more than an hour and hitting a high of 198? Maybe I should talk to my Dr first.”
